In Loving Memory of Brandon Dominguez-Chavarria A young life stolen far too soon

The Henderson community is in profound grief following the tragic and senseless death of 11-year-old Brandon Dominguez-Chavarria, who was killed in a road-rage shooting on the 215 Beltway Friday morning, November 14, 2025. What should have been a routine drive to school turned into an unbearable nightmare, leaving a family shattered and a city wrestling with sorrow, anger, and urgent questions about road safety.

A Morning That No One Will Forget

It was around 7:30 a.m., during the rush of a regular school day, when Brandon was riding in a small SUV with his stepfather on westbound Interstate 215 near the Gibson Road exit in Henderson, Nevada. Authorities say two vehicles — the SUV and a sedan — were “jockeying for position” in heavy traffic.

According to Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader, both drivers rolled down their windows and began arguing. Then the situation escalated dramatically — the driver of the sedan, later identified as 22-year-old Tyler Matthew Johns, allegedly drew a handgun and fired one shot into the back seat of the SUV, hitting Brandon.

In the chaos that followed, Brandon’s stepfather rammed his vehicle into the shooter’s sedan, bringing both cars to a stop in the middle of the freeway. The two men then exited their vehicles, exchanging heated words.  A passing Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer intervened, and Johns was taken into custody shortly after.

Paramedics rushed Brandon to University Medical Center, but despite their best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities later identified him as Brandon Dominguez, his full name revealed via a GoFundMe organized by his uncle.

The Suspect and Legal Fallout

The man accused in this tragic act, Tyler Matthew Johns, has since been charged with multiple felonies:

  • Open murder with a deadly weapon
  • Discharging a firearm into a vehicle or occupied structure
  • Shooting from or within a vehicle in a prohibited area

A judge denied bail, and Johns remains in custody at the Henderson Detention Center.

Remembering Brandon: A Light in His Family

While law enforcement continues its investigation, Brandon’s family and the broader Henderson community are grappling with profound loss. According to the GoFundMe page set up in his memory by his uncle, Victor Ayala, Brandon was “the light of our family—our happy, loving boy with the biggest heart, the silliest personality, and a joy that filled every room he entered.”

He loved soccer and the video game Roblox, and he was described as an eager learner, full of dreams and energy.  The fundraiser, which was launched to assist with medical and family expenses, had raised thousands within days—a testament to the ripple effect of his life and the way his death has touched so many.

Outcry, Reflection, and a Call for Change

Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader, grappling with the weight of the tragedy, made a heartfelt plea to the community: “We have an obligation to look out for each other … It is not worth engaging in this type of behavior.”  In his remarks, Rader underscored the senselessness of the violence, especially when a child was the victim.

Many in the community are echoing his call, urging drivers to exhibit patience and restraint — particularly as traffic intensifies during the holiday season.

The Deeper Impact: What This Loss Means for Henderson

The Dominguez-Chavarria family is now forced to navigate a heartbreaking void. The loss of Brandon is not just personal; it’s a communal wound. Friends, relatives, and neighbors speak of him with tenderness—his laughter, his curiosity, his kindness.
  2. Questions About Road Rage and Gun Violence
This incident has reignited troubling conversations about how quickly road frustration can escalate, especially when firearms are involved. A moment of anger on the freeway ended with a child’s life—raising urgent questions about conflict de-escalation, gun access, and responsibility behind the wheel.
  3. Public Safety & Accountability
With the legal process underway, many in Henderson are watching closely. They want to see accountability, but they also want change: How do we prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again? What role can education, community programs, and law enforcement play in promoting safer driving behaviors?
  4. Healing Through Community
Vigils, memorials, and outpourings of support have already started forming. Residents are coming together to mourn, to support the family, and to reaffirm a shared commitment: that Brandon’s death should not just be a headline—it should be a turning point.

A Plea for Compassion and Patience

In his public statement, Chief Rader emphasized a simple but powerful truth: patience matters. Choosing restraint, especially when tempers flare, can mean the difference between life and tragedy.

As the community mourns, there’s a growing sense that this heartbreaking incident must become a catalyst for reflection — not just for drivers on the road, but for all of us. Roadways are shared spaces. Lives are precious. In the echo of this loss, Henderson is being called to do better, to care more, and to remember that behind every vehicle is a person, a family, a story.
