Deadly Speed, Lasting Consequences: Henderson Street Racing Tragedy Ends in Decade-Long Sentence
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — A heartbreaking street racing crash that claimed a life in 2024 has reached a solemn conclusion in Henderson, as the man responsible for the dangerous chain of events was sentenced to spend the next ten years behind bars.
Korbin Candler, who had originally been indicted on a charge of wanton murder, was sentenced after pleading guilty to one count of Racing a Motor Vehicle on a Public Roadway and five counts of First-Degree Wanton Endangerment. The plea agreement marked a significant development in a case that deeply impacted the Henderson community and underscored the devastating consequences of reckless driving.
According to authorities, the fatal incident occurred on Green Street, where two vehicles were engaged in an illegal street race. Investigators revealed that during the race, one of the cars abruptly swerved in front of the other. That sudden maneuver forced the second racing vehicle into oncoming traffic, where it collided violently with a third, uninvolved car.
The crash proved fatal. Kelly Green, who was inside the racing vehicle that lost control, suffered injuries so severe that they did not survive. The loss sent shockwaves through the community, leaving family, friends, and residents mourning a life cut short by a moment of dangerous decision-making.
Candler’s case initially carried the weight of a wanton murder charge, reflecting the seriousness of the conduct and the tragic outcome. However, as the legal process unfolded, prosecutors, the defense, and the court carefully weighed multiple factors. Commonwealth Attorney Herb McKee stated that considerations included Candler’s age, level of maturity, and lack of prior criminal history.
“These cases are never easy,” McKee said, emphasizing the gravity of the harm caused. “All parties agreed this was a just resolution to the case.”
While the ten-year sentence brings a measure of legal closure, it does little to ease the pain endured by Kelly Green’s loved ones. The tragedy stands as a powerful reminder that street racing is not a victimless act. What may begin as a reckless thrill can instantly turn into irreversible loss, altering countless lives forever.
As Henderson reflects on this case, community leaders and law enforcement continue to stress the importance of responsible driving and the dangers of racing on public roads. The hope remains that this outcome will serve as a deterrent—and a lesson—so that no other family has to endure a similar loss born from preventable choices.
